The latest incarnation of Android was unveiled recently, the latest after Android 4.4 (KitKat), which was released earlier.
Lollipop is what it is expected to be named, as Google has been naming its mobile OS after popular confectionery items. Here are some of the most important benefits that the newest version is expected to deliver to its users:
- Snapdragon 808 and 810 processors would feature 64- bit processors and it is evident that the smartphones will be incredibly fast. Android 5.0 Lollipop will support these quick processors efficiently. Any operating system that will not support the high-end processors is sure to lag behind soon, until the launch of the Nexus 8, presumably.
- Google’s personal assistant is expected to get a makeover too. The use of Google’s virtual assistant has been mostly limited, but with the latest integration with third-party wearable accessories, including Google’s Nest thermostat, one would be able to control household appliances, just by blurting out the command that would enable the action. A cool feature, indeed!
- One of the biggest advantages of the new version is the integration with Google’s Android Wear platform, which will allow users to sync their devices including their smartphone or tablet.
- Along with iOS, even Google has concentrated on providing several health-related features including a largely rumored ‘Google Fit’ service. A session on “wearable computing with Google” on day one of I/O could be the stage from which such a feature is announced.
- Mobile phone security is also getting its due. When an Android smartphone gets lost or stolen, the new version will help users to make use of the “kill switch” mechanism that would make the phone inoperable.
- Many of the devices feature biometric security features including fingerprint scanners but voice recognition is said to be more secure. Speech recognition technology has evolved drastically with Lollipop and now the mobile device would be in a position to recognize the unique “footprint” of your voice and even unlock on command.
